REIKI FOR ANIMALS
Not only is Reiki an effective therapy for humans but also for animals who seem to be very receptive to it. Used alongside conventional veterinary treatment it can be a valuable tool. Animals are very open to energy therapies and, as there is no benefit to them in being unwell, will accept anything that helps their bodies to heal.
Reiki can assist in pain management as well as emotional and behavioural issues and, as with humans, is good for palliative care when an animal is suffering from a terminal illness. Any animal can be treated including dogs, cats, horses and smaller pets - even reptiles and fish!

Although many animals will accept hands-on treatment, the initial session may start with the therapist working at a distance from the animal until a trusting relationship has been established. Animals are generally very receptive to the energy being sent to them and will choose how close they want to get, often offering the part of their body that they would like to be treated.
As animals are very sensitive to their surroundings, it is beneficial to offer Reiki in their own home or stable. Treatments will usually last around an hour, as with humans, although sometimes animals may choose when to end the session if they decide that they have had enough.
If they are under veterinary care you must obtain the Vet’s permission for Reiki treatment.

Please note: to comply with the Veterinary Surgery Act of 1966 I am unable to diagnose illnesses or prescribe treatment. It is essential that you obtain veterinary treatment for a sick or dying animal. The paragraph below sets out the relevant legislation with regard to treating animals.
The Veterinary Surgery Act of 1966 prohibits anyone, other than a qualified veterinary surgeon from treating animals, including diagnosis of ailments and giving advice on such diagnosis.
However the healing of animals by contact healing, by the laying of hands or distant healing is legal. The Protection of Animals Act 1911 requires that if an animal clearly needs treatment from a veterinary surgeon the owner must obtain this. To give emergency First Aid to animals for the purpose of saving life or relieving pain is permissible under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Schedule 3 (taken from the UK Reiki Federation Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice - March 2002)
