ABOUT INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
Indian head massage is a massage therapy that works specifically on the area surrounding the head, scalp, face and neck, extending to the shoulders and upper back.
Indian head massage has been used in Asia for more than 5,000 years and has its roots in the ancient Ayurvedic (Science of Life) healing system, passed down from generation to generation within ancient India. India women would massage each others heads to prevent the onset of premature greying. This would also strengthen the hair. Massaging the head would start when a baby was born, but stopping with males at adulthood. Male Barbers would continue the massaging of adult males whilst having a hair cut.
It is a holistic therapy incorporating mind, body and spirit. In the West Indian head massage has been adapted to include traditional Indian and Western massage techniques.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE?
An Indian head massage lasts for approximately 30 to 45 minutes, although it can be shortened to 15 to 20 minutes if it takes place in the workplace. You will be invited to take a seat and relax on a low backed chair as it is mainly the head, face, neck, upper back and shoulders that are being worked on.
The skull is covered with a thin layer of muscle, which tightens when we are feeling tense, resulting in a headache and/or feelings of anxiety. By relaxing the muscles, a head massage can alleviate tension and relax your whole body.
It is a wonderfully relaxing therapy that is safe and very effective at relieving aches, pains, stress and rebalancing energy flow to provide deep sense of peace, calm and tranquillity.
Oils are optional in Indian head massage. If the massage is performed without oils you can remain fully clothed and a lightweight t-shirt would be recommended. If oil is preferred, upper clothing can be removed and a large towel used to ensure modesty.
